Volunteers in the Children’s Room

Those in 6th grade and up are invited to submit an application for volunteering in the Children’s Room at Northborough Free Library. Volunteer Application Form may be found on our website.

All volunteers must read and understand the Volunteer Policy. All volunteers over 18 years old will be asked to submit a Criminal Offense Records Investigation (C.O.R.I.) check as required by state law (Chapter 6 Sec. 172C) and approved before the volunteer work can begin.

Onboarding and Types of Tasks
New volunteers must be trained at a special training session. Coordinate with a Children’s Librarian to schedule [contact information at the bottom of this document]. New volunteers will begin shelf-reading, shelf-straightening, and cleaning of Children’s Room and toys, logging their progress on our shelf-reading sheet/cleaning sheet with their name, the date, and their progress.

Volunteers who display commitment and capability may be asked to perform additional tasks including book covering/uncovering, stickering and relabeling, assisting with crafts, assisting with running Children’s parties/events, and other projects.

Volunteers interested in running a Children’s Program should chat with our Children’s Librarians about being a Program Peer. [Find more information in Program Peer section below.]

Schedule and Commitment
Volunteers need not commit to a particular schedule, but will communicate with Children’s staff their intentions to volunteer at the library and will sign in and sign out in the volunteer binder at the beginning and end of every shift. The exception to this flexible schedule is a volunteer’s optional commitment to particular events or programs, especially when assisting with Children’s parties/events or becoming a Program Peer.

Please note that volunteer positions are limited. Lack of participation will be interpreted as a forfeit of volunteer position.

Program Peers
This is intended for those interested in running or assisting with a Children’s program/event. Program could be wholly created by the participant and supported by the Children’s Librarians. Alternatively, program could be created by the Children’s Librarians and assisted by participants. Talk to the Children’s Librarians for more information.
