How to get a Library Card
It's easy.  Please come to the Circulation Desk at the library.
Adults, 18 years+:  bring a picture ID, with proof of your current address.
Teens, 16 years+:  bring a picture ID
Teens, 13-15:  no ID required
Children, 0-12:  bring a parent or guardian (with their ID or library card).
The first card is free to any Massachusetts resident.  Replacement cards are $5.  Use your Northboro library card at almost all libraries in Central & Western Massachusetts!
If you have questions, Email us at Circulation@NorthboroughLibrary.org, or call us at 508-393-5025.

Tips for using your library card:
  • Create a PIN: If you created a PIN by using the old catalog prior to May 29, 2012: the first time you LOGIN, your PIN is your last name in all capitals. You then have the option to create a new PIN under the "Account Preferences" -> "Personal Information" tabs. If you got a new card after May 29, your PIN is the last four digits of your phone number. Again, you will have the option to create a new PIN under the Account Preferences -> Personal Information tabs.
  • Forgot Your PIN?  Login as usual, then click the "Forgot Your Password?" You will receive an email from CWMars with instructions to create a new PIN.

  • Change Your PIN: Login as usual, then click the "Account Preferences" -> "Personal Information" tabs to change your PIN immediately.

  • Overdues & Fines: Northboro Library does not charge daily fines; we do charge a $1/item fee when items are 28 days late. If you request books from other libraries, you are subject to their fines.

  • Renewals: most items may be renewed (one time only), unless another patron is waiting for the item.
  • Placing Requests (Holds): learn how to get items that are checked out or available at other libraries: books + movies + music + audiobooks + more!  (Please note that the network limits you to 20 Holds pending at one time).
  • Email: the library uses your email address only to send notices to alert you: when a requested item (Hold) has arrived, when an item will be due in 2 days, when an item is 2 weeks overdue.

If you'd like to receive the library newsletter, we maintain a separate email list; please email library@town.northborough.ma.us

Changing your Email: Login, then click on "Update Email Info"the "Account Preferences" -> "Personal Information" tabs.
  • Error Messages: When requesting an item, "See a librarian," usually means the library simply needs to update your information. This cannot be done by email; please call Circulation at 508-393-5025.

Your Reading History
Your Reading History allows you to keep a list (the library does not keep records of items you've returned). This list is confidential, and accessible only to you.
Your Reading History will begin once you choose this feature:
Log in, click the "Account Preferences" -> "Search Preferences" tabs and check the box next to "Keep history of checked out items?"
You can discontinue Your Reading History any time by unchecking the box.

You can also keep track of what you have placed requests on by clicking the "Account Preferences" -> "Search Preferences" tabs and check the box next to "Keep history of holds?"
See What's Good to Read for other fun websites that allow you to create lists, including notes and other features.

Loan periods, fines, fees
You may borrow up to 50 items at one time. At Northboro Library, most items have a 3-week loan period, and may be renewed once for 3 more weeks.  Other items have a 7-day loan period, and maybe renewed once for 7 more days.  Exceptions:  you cannot renew if someone else is waiting for an item, or if you are more than 3 weeks late.

Northboro Library does not charge daily fines; we do charge a $1/item fee when items are 28 days late. If you request books from other libraries, you are subject to their loan periods and fines.
We do not refund money if you find a book you lost and paid for.

If you damage or lose an item, you must pay for a replacement.  Sometimes we allow you to buy a replacement copy at a store, but you MUST have permission first.  Please contact the Checkout Desk, and we'll refer you to the correct staff member.

You cannot place Holds, check out materials, or use databases if your card is blocked.

Why your card may not work:

a) Your card is expired.  You must renew your card in person or by phone.  We will check that your address, phone, and email address are correct, and then your card will be renewed for another 2 years.

b)  You have a library item that is more than 28 days late.  You must return the item before you can use your card.  If visiting the library, please bring the item(s) to the Check-Out/Returns Desk, and we will check it in immediately.

c) You owe $10 or more in late fees.  You must pay enough of the fees to take your balance below $10, before you can use your card.
